Five Auspicious Days of Diwali to Buy Jewellery

5 Days of Diwali:

Lights, crackers, diyas, mithais, gifts, celebration, these are all basic constituents of Diwali, which is probably the most significant in India’s diverse array of festivals. The festival of lights as it is known is celebrated every year over 5 days with great pomp and conviction. Each day of this festival has a special meaning and significance attached to it. Let us take a closer look at these days to understand this unique festival better.

Day 1: Dhanteras

Dhanteras or the festival of wealth marks the start of Diwali celebrations. Dhanteras is celebrated on the 13th day of Krishna Paksh or the dark fortnight, and holds great significance for the business community. On this day, prayers are offered to the Goddess of Wealth: Lakshmi to ensure the success of ones livelihood. On this day, the God of death: Yama is also worshipped in order to live a long life of peace and prosperity.

The most significant feature of Dhanteras is the ritual of purchasing metal in any shape, size and form. This usually includes utensils or gold jewellery and the belief behind this is that the metal will bring with it some form of luck and prosperity.

Day 2: Choti Diwali: Narak Chaturdashi

Narak Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali as it is more commonly known falls on the second day, just before Diwali. It is called Narak Chaturdashi because it marks the victory of Krishna over Narkasur, the king of  Pragjyotishpur. It is believed that when Krishna returned after defeating Narkasur, he was given an oil scented massage and bath in order to purify and cleanse him from the filthiness of battle.

This has resulted in a ritual being performed on Choti Diwali, where people apply ‘ubtan’ which is a paste of kumkum and oil all over their body to cleanse them of impurities.

Day 3: Lakshmi Puja

On this day, Lakshmi-Panchayatan enters the universe. The 5 elements of ‘Panchayatan’ are Vishnu signifying happiness, Indra for Opulence, Kuber signifies the one who gives wealth away, Gajendra is the one who carries the wealth and Lakshmi signifies divine energy that helps in the above mentioned activities being carried out.

Prayers to Lakshmi to appease her most significantly mark the third day. This is due to the common belief that on this day, Lakshmi visits those who worship her and grants them wealth and success, whilst warding of negative energies. It is for this purpose that people leave their doors and windows open, to welcome Lakshmi in the hope that she will make all their prayers and wishes come true.

Day 4: Diwali

Badi Diwali or just Diwali is the most important of this five-day extravaganza. This day marks Lord Ram’s victory over Ravana and his return home to Ayodhya. Diyas are lit everywhere and people wear new clothes to celebrate this occasion. A pooja that varies amongst different people is performed to ward of evil spirits and bless loved ones. Firecrackers are burst and mithais are distributed to mark Ram’s victory, and also the triumph of good over evil.

Day 5: Bhai Dooj

The fifth and final day of Diwali celebrates the eternal and pure bond between a brother and sister.

There are various versions and stories as to why Bhai Dooj is celebrated, the most common being the return home of Krishna after defeating Narkasur, who was received by sister who welcomed him by putting a tilak on his forehead.

Since then, this day is marked by a promise taken by all brothers to stand by and protect their sisters against all evil, who mark their everlasting bond with a tilak.
